Personality: Removed from the situation of real life, Danny can seem a hard dog to connect with. He is. He's a loner, but he wants to have a purpose, something to busy himself throughout the day with, because he also hates wasting his time. He's an efficient, intelligent dog with a notion to philosophize from time to time, a bit rambling once you get him going, but tacit otherwise. He's rather amoral and doesn't give a damn about the right and wrong thing to do. He just cares about doing things in the right way. He's a perfectionist and the fact that he strives for perfection makes him an incredibly handy healer. However he also has a past that he doesn't talk about with other dogs. He was a dog bred and trained by the government. He has many skills, but enjoys healing the best simply because he likes to pursue the puzzle in helping ailing dogs. His serious personality hides the fact that he's definitely a fish out of water.
Family: Elise – surrogate mother
12 other brothers and sisters
History: Elise was a dog chosen to carry a large litter of several, unrelated puppies. She was artificially inseminated with several different puppies and was treated well as she carried the "super dogs" within her body. These were dogs that were supposed to be immune to whatever had forced the people to remove their pets from the mainland. These dogs were hope. The plan turned to be only a semi-success. She carried a large litter for several weeks before she whelped them in a den that was artificial and incredibly clean. Later, through experimentation, the puppies proved immune to the effects of the mysterious illness and were trained to see how they fared not only as pets, but as working dogs, which the society sorely needed. It turned out that they were incredibly intelligent and learned quickly. Danny was trained as a all-around working dog as well as a dog that provided data for several tests: From behavioral to physiological.
However, at three years of age, the decision was to have his superior genes make their mark on the islands. He was taught survival skills to ensure that he would find a mate and a pack. One of the things taught were the different medicinal plants and this stuck with him. What the scientists didn't count on was that living in a laboratory for most of his life had left him socially inept. He was awkward with other dogs and had an adorably naïve view of the world which belied his stony outlook.
In the end, he hungered for purpose because he always had a purpose in the laboratory. As an adult, he is a rather eccentric fellow, tacit until a dog finds the right way to coax him into talking and then he reveals himself as knowledgeable in the strangest subjects. Basically, he just got off the boat.
